Sharon's Creations & Interview  1/4/21

How long have you been Upcycling/Refashioning/Recreating Clothing from thrifted textiles?

I have been sewing forever. I grew up with a vintage singer sewing machine which was given to me by my grandfather the tailor. I have always had a fascination for textiles.

How long have you been sewing?

I have been sewing for 57 years and during the last 30 years that I have been teaching I have developed many simplified, hands on techniques. Use of digital media enables international knowledge sharing and PDF tutorials are a wonderful way of achieving this aim.

How did you get started in Upcycling /Refashioning?

I have always had my own particular style and found myself recreating every outfit I had. It was a natural progression to frequent second hand and charity stores for the special, unusual and thrifty finds.

Why do you Upcycle/Refashion/Recreate clothing from thrifted textiles?

There is an abundance of material to be reused. The cost is minimal and the benefits are maximal.

What type of clothing do you like to create and why?

Mix and match, boleros, tunics and pants. Practical clothing for which fabrics can be sourced very cheaply at charity stores. From t shirts I create boleros , crop tops and scarves. And from sheets I create pants, bags and pouches.

What is your favorite textile to Upcycle/Refashion/Recreate from? and why?

In the last few years my favorite textiles are sheets and button down shirts.

What was your favorite project?

My favorite project is creating young upcyclers and recreators, my sewing students. I find it extremely gratifying when my students wear the costumes and dresses that they designed and sewed themselves to Purim and Prom parties.

I like to describe my Upcycling as:

I would describe my style as practical, boho fashion.

Thank You Sharon for sharing your creations with us!
